不知道算不算冷的笑話：Snowman is an island.


大二時的英史課上了John Donne很有名的〈Meditation XVII〉：

No man is an island, entire of itself,
every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main,
if a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were,
any man's death diminisheds me, because I am involved in mankind,
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls,
it tolls for thee.

李敖曾經大致上翻譯過，譯文如下：

沒有人能自全／沒有人是孤島
每人都是大陸的一片／要為本土應卯。

那便是一塊土地／那便是一方海角／那便是一座莊園，
不論是你的、還是朋友的
一旦海水沖走／歐洲就要變小

任何人的死亡／都是我的減少
作為人類的一員／我與生靈共老。

喪鐘在為誰敲／我本茫然不曉
不為幽明永隔／它正為你哀悼 


很有名的一首詩，海明威甚至還引用了最後那一句
「for whom the bell tolls」當作書名，寫成了他的《戰地鐘聲》
當時同學們也最愛拿這段名氣響亮的句子來打趣說笑
最常見的冷笑話笑點就是把「沒有人是一座孤島」刻意斷句斷成了：
『沒有人』是一座孤島。


想像著一座叫做『沒有人』的孤島
像圖片中的雪人那樣，孤獨的聳立著，
那樣的畫面不知為何讓人覺得有趣，但也有點寂寥

John Donne深遠的意境，或許很難在今日的現代人心中激起共鳴了吧
No man is an island……或許後面要加一個問號，才比較中肯些。
